Improve Your Gas Mileage

With soaring gas prices I think we could all use a little advice on how to save a buck or two at the pump. Although electric cars are pushing their way forward towards a mainstream alternative of transportation, combustion engines are still the most prominent type of power for our vehicles. Here are some ways to use a little less gas and save some money!

1. Drive in the highest possible gear

Manual transmissions are a dying past time but as of now many cars still have them. If your car has a manual transmission, you’re in a prime position to take control of your gas mileage. Driving in the highest possible gear without putting your engine as too much of a mechanical disadvantage will keep your engine’s RPMs lower. This will cause your vehicle’s engine to use less gas.

2. Inflate your tires to the recommended pressure

This is one of the easiest ways to improve your vehicles gas mileage. Tires that are under inflated with cause more drag on your vehicle. This drag makes your vehicle’s fuel efficiency go down the toilet as it is causing your engine to work harder than it has to to maintain the same speed as if your tires were inflated to the right pressure.

3. Don’t forget to replace your air filter

Unfortunately many vehicle’s owners are guilty of this. They just simply forget about this little act of maintenance that needs to be done more often. This is one of the simplest and easiest things you can do to improve your vehicle’s fuel efficiency. When your air filter is clogged up it doesn’t allow your vehicle’s engine to efficiently draw air from the environment. If you’re vehicle isn’t getting enough air to combine with fuel to produce power, it’ll use more fuel to compensate which will hinder gas mileage and performance as well.
